Myopia has become one of the most common vision conditions affecting children today. One of the most exciting innovations to emerge is the Essilor Stellest™ lens, recently approved by the FDA for use in children ages 6 to 12. Already proven internationally since 2020, these lenses represent a major leap forward in slowing the progression of myopia.
Myopia is a progressive condition that increases the risk of serious eye diseases later in life, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration. Early intervention through myopia management can make a lasting difference in preserving your child’s vision health.
Essilor Stellest™ lenses are a revolutionary type of eyeglass lens designed to both correct myopia and slow its progression. On September 25, 2025, the FDA approved these lenses for children ages 6 to 12 - marking a major milestone for myopia management in the United States.
While newly approved in the U.S., Stellest lenses have already been available internationally since 2020, particularly in Europe, Canada, and Asia, where eye care professionals have seen positive results in helping children manage myopia progression.
These lenses feature a clear central zone for sharp vision surrounded by concentric rings of intentional blur. This unique optical design creates peripheral light defocus, which helps reduce the stimulus for the eye to elongate - a key factor in worsening myopia.
Every child’s vision needs are unique, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to myopia control. Here are a few important considerations when exploring your options:
•Tailored recommendations: Your optometrist can assess your child’s lifestyle, prescription, and eye health to determine whether Stellest lenses, orthokeratology (Ortho-K), soft contact lenses for myopia control, or atropine eye drops may be most effective.
•Ongoing monitoring: Children undergoing myopia management should have their progress evaluated regularly - typically every six months. This may include measuring axial length (eye growth) to ensure the treatment is working as intended.
•Consistency matters: For Stellest lenses to work effectively, they should be worn at least 10 hours per day, 6 days per week12 hours per day. Consistent wear ensures the optical design can do its job in controlling eye growth.
